How to open a trade with a stranger
Three rules. Offer before you ask. One for one. Small steps. Everything that goes wrong when people trade nudes anonymously comes from breaking one of these.
Offer before you ask, because "send me something" from a stranger is a demand. "I have a mirror shot, torso only, want to swap?" is a trade. One for one, because the ratio is the only leverage either of you has, and kept level nobody is ever more than one picture exposed. Small steps, because your first picture is also your test picture: make it the least revealing thing you would still call a nude. If they vanish with it, you lost nothing.

Name the offer
What you have, how explicit, what you want back. Vague offers get vague answers. "Tits for tits, no face" is fine. It is a chat room, not a cover letter.

Send the safe one first
Something with nothing identifying in it, something you would not mind losing. This is the picture that tests the stranger.

Wait for the match
Nothing else leaves your phone until you have one back. Not because they are untrustworthy, because you cannot know yet.

If both sides want more explicit, go there one picture at a time. Either side can stop at any step with no explanation.
Reading a collector in two messages
A collector is someone who wants your picture and has no intention of sending one. They are the main hazard of trading with strangers, and the good news is they are easy to spot, because they all run the same script.
Message one: they ask before offering, or accept your offer with no mention of what they will send. Message two: you send your safe picture, ask for theirs, and a stall appears. Camera is broken. Send one more first. Or their picture arrives glossy and well lit and looks like a search result, because it is one. Two messages, one safe picture, and you know. People who get hurt here are the ones who sent three pictures on the strength of a nice opener.
The tells: asks first and offers nothing; any stall after your first picture; a match with different lighting, room or body from their claimed situation; pressure to move to an app "where it is easier", meaning where they can get your number. Any one ends the trade. Stop replying.
Verify without insulting anyone
A stranger trading live will accept a verification request. A stranger trading saved pictures cannot pass one. So ask, in a way a real person finds easy.
The two that work: a nickname written on paper and held in shot, or a specific pose you name, small and odd enough that it is not sitting in anyone's folder. Two fingers up. Hand on the left shoulder. A saved picture cannot do it; a live person can in ten seconds.
Say why you are asking and offer the same back: "Paper with my nick for paper with yours, then we go on." Framed as a mutual step, not an accusation, it never lands as an insult. If they refuse a ten-second request from someone who just offered the same, that is your answer.
The verification shot is still a picture of you. Same rules: no face, nothing identifying. It proves you are live, not who you are, and that is exactly enough.
Prepare it so a leak is a picture of nobody
Assume every picture you send a stranger ends up somewhere. Most will not. Plan for the ones that do: make sure the leaked picture is not of anyone.
Face out of frame or under a solid block, never a blur. Tattoos, scars and everyday jewellery covered. Background plain, mirrors and screens checked. Metadata stripped, because the original file can carry your location. The censor tool does opaque blocks in the browser and never uploads the file.
Do all of that and the worst case is a stranger owns a picture of a body with no name attached. Not "it will never leak", which nobody can promise, but "if it leaks, it is nobody".

Zoom in on mirrors, windows, screens and shiny taps before you send. Reflections give faces back.

Strip the file
Screenshot the picture and send the screenshot, or turn off location in the share sheet.

Watermark if it is explicit
The stranger's nickname across the image where cropping wrecks it. A leak then points at one person.
When someone takes and vanishes
It will happen. Someone takes your first picture and is gone. If you did this right, it cost you one picture of nobody, and the right response is almost nothing.
Do not chase. A second message asking where their half is only confirms you are still there and engaged, which is useful to exactly one kind of person. If you are somewhere with moderators, report the nickname: it stops the next person getting the same treatment, and in a live room a mod can remove someone in the time it takes to type the report. Then move on. The safe-picture-first rule exists for this trade, and it did its job.

Why a live moderated room beats app DMs for this
A DM on an app sits on an account. A live room does not. That one difference changes every rule above.
To trade nudes chat-style on Snapchat, Kik or Telegram you need a number or an account, with a searchable username, a contacts list your number sits in, and a profile that gets screenshotted. Reddit and Discord add a post history. The picture is attached to an identity from the start, and the anonymity layer you needed is already gone. Then the picture itself: in most DMs you send the original file or paste a link from an image host that logged the upload under your login. Is it safe to trade nudes with strangers?
It is safe enough to do well and dangerous enough to do badly. The risk is not the stranger, it is what the picture carries: your face, your tattoos, your room, your phone number on the account you sent it from. Trade from a place with no profile, send pictures that identify nobody, go one for one in small steps, and the worst case is a picture of a torso that nobody can attach to a name.

Chasing gets you nothing and gives them a second conversation to work with.
